Continuing this month’s focus on Inspiration, I reflect on the millennials who have inspired me along my journey. As a baby boomer, I marvel at how and when millennials get things done. My generation is sometimes critical of generation X (born 1965 – 1980) and the millennial generation (born 1981 - 1996); however, I embrace them all wholeheartedly, especially my children, a Gen X’er and Millennial, because I love learning and growing.
Of all the millennials in my life, that person who inspires me the most is my daughter. To say, she has impacted my knowledge and growth is an understatement. My millennial daughter is the one who first recognized and supported my gift of life coaching leading me to starting the business, AMPED, LLC. Always caring and encouraging, in 2016, she asked me “Mommy what’s next for you”? I didn’t have a quick answer then; however, the answer came later because I had come off a roller coaster ride due to dealing with retirement and coping with my dad’s illness. I was assured that whatever decision I made and when I made it, I knew my daughter had my back. To this day, even as an adult, she still affectionately calls me “mommy” which I fully embrace for our mother-daughter bond is deep for she always champions me to be the best, as I do her.
My decision came in November 2016 and it has been full speed ahead with strong support from many people. Among them, I’ve grown and learned more especially from millennials. Millennials, in addition to a few important/impactful Generation X’ers, have supported me and my vision for AMPED, LLC and continue to inspire me to look onward and upward with building and expanding my business. For example, AMPED’s logo, inspired for passing the torch to the next generation, was designed by a millennial. They frequently provide tips and tricks on how to improve website designs. And, guess:
· Who lead the charge for getting AMPED’s logo created? Yes, my daughter and her friends.
· Who championed AMPED, LLC to become a reality? My daughter.
· Who continually helps to foster strong relationships to grow AMPED? You got it right, my daughter.
In partnership, my daughter and I are always brainstorming and sharing ideas to optimize my business experience and leveraging opportunities. I can go on and on about her; however, this forum would not do adequate justice in doing so. But to give you a sample, my daughter is a force that can make things happen and happen quickly. Regarded by many as charismatic, a trusted friend, a forward thinker, an active listener, and is a creative spirit are just a few of her many traits that describes her quiet leadership. In millennial terms, she’s my ride or die. Her wisdom surpasses her age and understanding. She inspires me to enjoy and celebrate life to the fullest! Today, our mother-daughter bond remains strong, and our light burns brighter and fuels AMPED, LLC’s flame burning.
In sharing this story, I hope it starts more conversations with millennials and others to start preparing to pass the torch to the next generation!
